This superb little hardcover book by Macmillan is one of their extensive Collector’s Library series. As a Naval Volunteer Reservist in the Second World War, Shute developed anti-submarine missiles and was sent to Normandy to chronicle the D-Day landings. In 1945 he emigrated to Australia with his wife and daughters and there wrote perhaps his most famous novels – A Town Like Alice (1950) and On the Beach (1957). I love the faithful 1981 TV adaptation which was made from it, and I really love the superb audio recording, read by Robin Bailey. Jean and Joe are such likeable characters, Shute’s style is so easy to read, and to know that some of the story was based on real events adds to its appeal. Nevil Shute I think that the contents of a book are far more important than the style.
